Hail to the Android Masters!
Initiative from the East
Android Masters is a collegiate inter-school Android app development challenge open to all universities and colleges across the Philippines. This annual event aims students in the Philippines turn their innovative ideas into creative apps and publish it to Google Play Store.
Android Masters is an initiative of Google Developer Group (GDG) Philippines, a group of enthusiastic Filipino developers that helps developers become better developers. The event is running on its 4th year this 2018.
After seeing the potential of young people in the Philippines and their innovativecreations, Eclaro Business Solutions, a business and technology consulting firm, partnered with GDG Philippines since 2017 to continue Android Masters on being the most-awaited competition yearly and in discovering young talents.
Competition Categories
The competition is divided into two categories for the students to choose from namely:
We at GDG Philippines are surprised in what these students are bringing and showing yearly. Some of the raised problems during the competition are also eye openers for us and keeps us more motivated to gather and find partners that can help them nurture what they have.
Process
Android Masters starts opening its doors every initial date of I/O Roadshow in the Philippines. Since we travel and share to different places, we saw this as an opportunity to make Android Masters known to every student and universities we go to.
Yearly, application entries are in growing rate.
Judges
We have invited individuals known in their professions that can help us choose who will be the finalists for each category and who will be the teams to be hailed as Android Masters.
For this year, we were able to invite 15 judges with expertise in games and converting problems into a digitized solution.
Preliminary Judging
Scores are computed in the end of the session and the top 5 teams with the highest scores will be advancing to the finals.
Product Pitching: The Finals
Finalists gather to present their applications to the judges and attendees of the event. The Finals will determine who will be hailed as the Android Masters.
Same process in preliminary judging will be done during this session. Applications are scored by functionality, creativity, impact and product pitching.
Audience Profile
Android Masters was attended by 215 attendees with each having their own profession. The event aims to focus on students, further enhancing their skill in mobile development field and preparing them in the industry in which the event successfully gathered 44% students.
A Thrilling Event
A thrilling event for the Android Masters finalists as the contenders all came with their remarkable presentations, but in the end only one champion per category will be hailed as the Android Masters of 2018. Criteria for judging includes Functionality(App Completeness), Creativity (App Uniqueness), Usability(UI/UX), Impact (Overall impact of the app to the society/target users) and Product Pitch (Final Presentation) as these made the competition tougher for the participants.
The finalists of the app for social good impressed the judges with their creative and convenient apps that can be used to help the society while the finalists of the game category gave not only the judges but also the crowd an exciting experience as they present their fun and exciting games, after their presentation the judges held a deliberation to assess the champion and unto the most anticipated announcement.
Hailed as the Android Masters of 2018 for the apps for social good category were the team UCU Project D Coders from Urdaneta City, Pangasinan with their app ‘ElimixAR’ and team Aether O(N) from Cebu City together with their winning app ‘Picnic Panic.’
The champions received a cash worth of Php 100,000 and a plaque for the title of Android Masters, the champions and their app will then be incubated by Eclaro, a business solutions and consulting firm, and will receive an app development assistance through continuous coaching and mentoring, an opportunity to demonstrate their app on future GDG PH events and with a possibility of a Free Scholarship Grant from Eclaro Philippines that will be determined by the top management. Special awards amounting of Php
20,0000 and gift packs from our sponsors were also given to the deserving teams with the categories: Most Downloaded App, All Women Tech, Best booth and Social Relevance.
Overall all the event, were both fulfilling from the sponsors, down to the organizers up to the participants as we all witnessed the amazing talents that these young generation.
